Cloud Computing - What is it?
Quite simply, Cloud Computing allows small, medium or large businesses to store their confidential data in
Computers that reside in secure data centres, and to access that data from anywhere in the World via the
Internet, using any approprate device, eg. Desktop Computer, Mobile Phone, Tablet, Laptop or Netbook.
Traditional office networks normally require at least 1 Server that contains various applications and databases,
and a number of desktop and laptop computers that are connected to the Server by a Network. The Server
Operating System and Application software must be licensed and maintained (with the latest software updates)
and the databases must be regularly 'backed-up'.
Whereas, with Cloud Computing, a company's applications and data are stored on Servers
that are in secure data centres owned by reputable third party hosting companies. This information
can be accessed from anywhere in the World, and at any time, via any Internet connection.
The Server operating system and application software are regularly maintained, and the data is
automatically 'backed-up' every day.
Mobile, social, big data, the cloud. These trends are all impacting how businesses engage
with their customers, partners, and employees in order to better compete.
Microsoft approaches cloud computing as a way to help customers take a key step toward better business
agility, economics, and user experiences.
We also know that for many modern IT Directors and technology
leaders, the cloud presents an opportunity to redefine the role IT plays in implementing a
business’ strategy. Because of its power to fundamentally change how businesses operate and
compete, the cloud is a game changer for the enterprise.
